Archive Guess the Location

Post  dforrest on Thu 15 Oct 2015, 11:17 pm

I was always very inserted in participating in the "Archive Guess the Location" thread on UKTS but, as with much of UKTS, it is no longer active.  Is there any interest in starting such a thread here?  The rules are:

The subject of the photo should be either in Britain/Ireland or have run in Britain/Ireland before leaving for elsewhere.

Basic cut off for era is 1970 so old diesels, preferably broken down, are accepted.

Winner posts the next picture.

Spot-on Mark! This station has fond memories for me as we moved to Fratton when I was 8 years old. We lived less than 5 minutes walk from here. This station provided my introduction to Southern locos - the Merchant Navy's and BOB/WestCountry's were always great to see, but the King Arthur's were my favourites. A few years later I had to go to school by train each day and most often it was in one of the 4-Sub's seen in the photo.

Formerly a terminus Station, shown here overgrown but still in place, now only the station building survives but converted for other uses.

Not quite. Bromley North was electrified in about 1926. This has not been electrified and it is still going strong. Was part of the LBSC.

Well I do know where this station  is Roderick, but as I do not have any pictures to post or for that matter know how to without going via photo bucket.
But I am enjoying watching this topic. I certainly would have got Fratton, that picture must have been taken circa 1970 just before  Portsmouth panel box was comissioned.
The units were not SUBs but 2 BIL or perhaps the leading unit was possibly a 2HAL.
Yes I have been relieved and also relieved and worked many a train from Fratton.
The panel box survived until 2006 when the area was taken over by a new signalling centre at Havant except that on the weekend it was all being commissioned, "The string
broke" Now they had ripped out all of the old signalling between Fratton and Portsmouth Harbour, The result was, they had to reopen the old glass house style signalbox at
Portsmouth Harbour and institute Absolute block working with only two trains an hour each way!.............Classic...............
Cheers
Andy

RE: ARCHIVE GUESS THE LOCATION

Andrew, at the risk of going off topic, did you drive the Southern Railway electrics with the straight Westinghouse Brakes? If so I have one or two questions and could start another topic if you don't mind answering them.

Your comments about signalling are very interesting. There were semaphore signals at Amberley until a few years ago.

I am sure someone who has driven on London and South East will recognize the last picture.

Kind regards,

Roderic

No Roderic, I was a Guard based at Eastleigh between 1974 and 1995, then at Bournemouth, until 2014.
Sadly the Bils/Hals had all been withdrawn but we did have a couple of Stores units 022 and 023 that were converted from 2 HAL Driving Motor coaches but still retained
the straight Westinghouse brake system.
We used to work between Eastleigh Works Stewarts  Lane or Wimbledon Park.
Yes, Sadly like nearly everywhere else, on the Southern, Colour light signalling has taken over from the good old Semaphore signalling.
Cheers

This location has not changed at all over the years except the main line where both the photographer and myself is now single line and Eridge station has
lost its semaphore signalling. Both the Tunbridge Wells or Oxted to Lewis steam train and the DEMU are standing in the platform now occupied by the
SPA Vally Railway.
The very first Train I ever worked as a guard was a Hampshire DEMU 1133 back in 1974 Motor coach 60151 has been lovingly restored at Isfield
but currently is paired with Driving Trailer 60820 ex unit 1121.

So as not to bog this thread down, 30777 is heading eventually for London Waterloo. I will agree that there is not much of the station in the background but as I said before it is on the former South West Division and there is not much of it that is not electrified! Cool

Well done Roderick.
You have the location Right. which means over to you..... Very Happy

The train is actually heading away from Romsey , It has been Diesel hauled from Weymouth to Southampton with the Arthur on the rear. and is Heading for Laverstock spur
(Salisbury) and will take the route through Andover towards Basingstoke and London.
The station  was always Dunbridge when I was a lad.  Then some local Counciller had a bright and wonderful idea Rolling Eyes Mad
Mottisfont was the first station on the line from Kimbridge Junction to Andover closed in 1964, Another Beeching cut.

Oh dear. The station building was swept away in the late 50s.
On the left are the lines from St Pancras; in the centre are the District Lines and on the right are the main lines to Fenchurch Street.
Beyond the station building was a flat junction which was completely remodelled in the late 50s with  a dive under to bring the westbound District line alongside the same platform as the Up Main Line to give cross platform interchange. Google images might help.

Good luck. Roderic
