MSTS - Helpful Facts and Links - Part 12 (Basic Activity Installation)

Post  rufuskins on Thu 28 Feb 2013, 12:23 pm

An oft repeated query on MSTS forums is related to not being able to get an activity to run, and based on numerous hints and tips on the same forums the following HFL part could be used to address this.
The following is a simple crib list:-
1. It is assumed that the MSTS installation has been set up in accordance with the Steam4me tutorial including the activity unpack fix – see HFL Part 2.
Mark has pointed out that the activity unpack fix along with a number of other tweaks can be downloaded from here.
2. After the activity file has been downloaded it should be unzipped to a temporary location, where the contents can be examined.
3. One would normally expect to see the activity file, a README and possibly a stock list – this should list all of the stock required for the activity and its source.
4. The README should be read to see what is required to be done and any particular requirements specified; e.g. MSTS Bin may be required to allow cab change. If the activity is heavily populated with stock for player, AI and DIT consists there may be a reference suggesting a need to amend the settings, such as reducing the “quantity of sound”! It may of course also include the stock list and source.
5. It is recommended that all of the required stock is installed into your Train Set, unless of course you already have it. It is suggested that the stock is checked using Route Riter or similar to ensure that all of the associated alias files are present for the installed stock; e.g. sound and cabview files.
6. The activity file can then be installed. It is suggested that the activity is checked using Route Riter or similar to ensure that all paths, etc. are present.

When installing and/or amending all or any part of MSTS it is strongly recommended that you create a back-up copy, because even with the best will in the world mistakes can and will happen. There’s many a “simmer” who can testify to that.
