MSTS - Helpful Facts and Links - Part 35 (Unable to install some MSTS route CDs)

Post  slipperman12 on Sun 17 Apr 2016, 9:47 pm

In September 2015, Microsoft issued a Windows update which removed the ability to read CDs protected by the SecuRom/SafeDisc anti-piracy system from Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.  Windows 10 was also released without this facility.   This document details the actions needed to enable the add-ons on these CDs to be installed.  Separate procedures for Windows 7/8/8.1 and 10 are shown below.

Currently, three MSTS routes have been found to be on CDs protected by the SecuRom/SafeDisc system - Severn Valley Railway, West Somerset Railway and TGV. If others are discovered, this post will be updated accordingly.

It is necessary to get your hands slightly "dirty", but don't let that put you off!!

Just Trains has issued a tool to perform the required actions for Win 7/8/8.1 users. It is available here : http://cdn.justflight.com/justflight/support/supportfiles/SecControl.exe  Thanks to Martin Wright for giving me permission to include the link here.  I suggest you try it first before delving into my procedure!

WINDOWS 7, 8 and 8.1

1.  Windows Update KB 3086255 must be uninstalled.
   a) Control Panel > Windows Update > View Update History > Installed Updates
   b) Search for KB3086255
   c) If it's found, it will appear in the main window. Right-click on it and select Uninstall
   d) Perform a restart, if requested.
2. To start the service, an elevated Command Prompt must be run.
   a) Press the Start button > Type cmd in the "Search programs and files" box
   b) Where "cmd.exe" is shown at the top if the window, right-click it and select "Run as administrator"
   c) In the DOS box which appears, type : sc start secdrv  and press ENTER
   d) If the resulting message includes "...the service is already running", that is OK - Continue at f)
   e) If a mini-table is shown with the second line :  "STATE : ... RUNNING" it shows that the service has been started.
   f) Quit out of the DOS box
3. Insert the required CD in the drive and attempt to install the route.  If it still doesn't work, re-boot the PC and try again.
4. When the required CD/s have been installed, it is recommended that the appropriate updates are added.
5. To maintain PC security :
   a) Press the Start button > Type cmd in the "Search programs and files" box
   b) Where "cmd.exe" is shown at the top if the window, right-click it and select "Run as administrator"
   c) In the DOS box which appears, type : sc stop secdrv  and press ENTER
   d) A mini-table is shown with the second line :  "STATE : ... STOPPED"  shows that the service has been stopped.
   e) Quit out of the DOS box.

(19 Sept 2016) PLEASE NOTE : Due to changes in Windows 10, the following procedure has been amended from that originally published.
WINDOWS 10
This procedure requires access to the Windows System32 and, possibly, SysWOW64 folders

1. Open the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder
2. If a file named secdrv.sys is present, continue at 4.
3. If there is no secdrv.sys file, it must be downloaded from www.dll-found.com/download/s/secdrv.sys , unpacked and copied into the above-named folder.
4. While holding the SHIFT key, select Restart
5. Click on the Troubleshoot option, then the Advanced option, followed by Startup settings.
6. Click on the Restart button and, when the options are displayed, move the cursor down to  "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" and press the Enter button
7. The system will then restart.
8. Attempt to install the required CD.
9. If it still doesn't work, it may be necessary to start the service :
   a) Right-click the Start button and select "Command Prompt (as administrator)"
   b) In the DOS box, type :  sc start secdrv and press the ENTER key
   c) If the resulting message includes "...the service is already running", that is OK - Continue at f)
   d) If a mini-table is shown with the second line :  "STATE : ... RUNNING" it shows that the service has been started - Continue at f).
   e) If anything else is displayed, see Win 10 NOTE 1.
   f) Quit out of the DOS box
   g) Try the CD again.
10. If it still fails to install, open the C:\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers folder and delete any secdrv.sys file found there and try again.

Win 10 NOTE 1 : If there is already a secdrv.sys present (step 2) but the CD still won't run (step 8 ), delete the file and restart from step 3.

Win 10 NOTE 2 : If the PC is restarted/re-booted, the settings created at steps 4 - 6 will NOT be retained.  It is recommended that, after the required CD/s have been used, together with any updates, the PC is re-booted.

ROUTES NOTE 1 :  The updates for the Severn Valley Railway and West Somerset Railway require that CD1 is in the drive when they are run.  It is recommended that they are run immediately after the main route has been installed and before the PC is re-booted, otherwise the above procedure will require repeating.

ROUTES NOTE 2 : Although the route CDs contain a file called secdrv.sys, its use in Windows 10 isn't recommended as it doesn't appear to work correctly in all cases.

ROUTES NOTE 3 : The Severn Valley Railway add-on comprises two CDs; the second must be inserted in the drive when requested (as normal).  If you have Windows Defender running in Windows 10, it reports that file ARUN.exe on CD2 contains a virus and that it is removing it.  As it's on a CD, it can't be removed!  This message should be ignored.
