First Generation Diesel Multiple Units - Part 2

Basic Facts for TOPS Class 118

This is Part 2 of an occasional series of basic facts for my uploaded FG DMU repaints for MSTS.

This part covers the Class 118 sets, that can be found here uploaded by Rufuskins. The make-up of the sets is defined in the Consists section of the UKTS uploads, and these represent the typical formation of 2 and 3 car sets. It should of course be pointed out that no formation was ever “cast in tablets of stone”!

The Class 118s were introduced in early 1960. They were allocated as follows:-

- 108 units went to Reading for use on suburban services out of Paddington
- 15 units went to Bristol for use on services in the Bristol-Taunton area
- 45 units went to Plymouth Laira for use on services in Devon and Cornwall west of Newton Abbott

In the late 1980s a number of sets were allocated to Birmingham Tyseley and Cardiff Canton.

The Class 118s were not subject to refurbishment and went from BR Blue livery straight to BR Blue Grey. Hence the BR White Blue livery in the UKTS uploads is not strictly correct and should therefore be treated as fictional.
