Steam Heat Effect

Post  35005CP on Wed 20 Nov 2013, 11:09 am

Hi everyone,
I've just noticed over on the other Sim that there is a Steam heat effect. So this has got me wondering if it is something that would be possible to do somehow in MSTS?
I would imagine that you would have to make an end coach into a Steam Engine in TSM and point the smoke downwards?
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy

You can get brakevans with smoke effects, I have this one in my collection and it is defined as an .eng file

http://members.uktrainsim.com/filelib-info.php?form_fileid=12530

There are some more here which I don't have, but I should imagine they work in pretty much the same way

http://www.uktrainsim.com/filelib-info.php?form_fileid=5743

You could take a closer look at these and see if the same principle could be adapted for your steam heat effects.

Hope that helps.

Hi Gentlemen,
I believe Jon Bilton made something similar for the steam heating boilers in his diesel locos. Sorry, but I don't have any file IDs at present Sad

Thanks for the help chaps. I'm going to delve into this and see what I can come up with for Steam heat... I'll give it a go in finding and editing a wagon from the file ID's that Mark has sent me and see if I can get any steam to appear from a pipe at the back... Should be interesting..... Shocked
Mind you if it has been done already Ged, then will certainly be interesting to try and have a look at?
I see that it is a Bin patch for the other said Sim?? I wonder if this can be done in the next Bin upgrade? (If there will ever be another one)
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,
I don't think it's a Bin patch for "the other sim", but a modification to a bin file.  As far as I am aware, each item of stock has a bin file.
... and, No, there will never be another version of the MSTS Bin patch, unfortunately Sad

I'll come back with Jon Bilton's file IDs

Ged

Hi Ged,
Sorry I don't really know or delve into the other Sim apart from when I see the images when I log in. So not understanding the 'Bin' term for it, I just go and associate it with MSTS. Shocked Embarassed
If you can manage to find Jon Biltons File ID's then who knows what the future might hold for MSTS?.... Wink
Cheers

Hi Andy,
I've only managed to find one of Jon Bilton's locos, but I'm sure there are more : File ID 28508 (Class 26/27)

Another file which popped up is 7399 (Leaky Steam Heating Hose). Although it is for a specified wagon, I'm sure it could be applied to any vehicle.

My memory may be playing tricks, but I think I remember seeing a regular coach with the same effect; none of my searches have been successful!

Cheers,
Ged

Is it possible to add smoke or steam via a freight animation?

Does anyone know if you can incorporate any Parameters into a Freighanim line apart from headboards..... Might be a new HFL section idea?
Cheers

Yes you can add any shape you like to a freight anim line, though headboards and crews are their most common useage, some steam locos have all their external pipework and fine detail added later via a freight anim, you are restricted one freight anim to each loco/wagon, not sure if you can add animated shapes or steam/smoke though.

I would suggest that it is necessary to produce an engine file that includes the appropriate definition of the smoke/steam. The smoking brake van is an engine file and the smoke is defined in the "Effects" section.

I note that Jon Bilton used Steam Special Effects within "Effects" for his special exhaust effects for Class 50s.

Is Jon Bilton still about in the MSTS social network/Scene? If so, is it worth sending him an invite and asking him the questions as to the way he works and an insight into his tricks?
Cheers

I don't think adding steam would be too difficult. You just add a poly where you want the outlet and then give it a Special Reference name that MSTS recognises, such as fx_stackFX. The difficulty would be in manipulating the .eng file to give the stream or cloud of steam that you need. Rick Gibb would be the one to advise on this. I seem to remember he produced a run-down Jubilee with steam constantly blowing from leaking cylinders.

Jon doesn't seem to frequent ukts much these days. His last visit was back in September and he mentioned 'not using msts at the moment'.
His leaking steam pipes were very good, I'll see if I can find then in the library. They were definately eng file based.

EDIT Jon included a leaking steam pipe in file id 14916, the Lion prototype diesel. He based it on file id 7399.

I've just made a leaky steam pipe wagon for the SouthEast route using file 7399.
It's quite easy if you know how to rename an eng file.

Just copy and paste the entile .wag file into the exSR_BananaVan_Steamy.eng file replacing all the top part before the Engine ( exSR_BananaVan_Steamy line.
Rename as you would an engine.

Look for

StackFX
(
0 1 3.75

and reposition the output. the numbers are across. up. and lengthways. Negative numbers are to the left and to the rear of the centre.

My premium has run out so I can't use Atomic Album to post a screenshot.
