Early Xmas present for me and a useful reminder to others?????

Post  rufuskins on Tue 10 Dec 2013, 10:16 pm

I've had an early Xmas present from some person or persons unknown, involving using my debit card details on-line. It wasn't until I tried to get some money out of the hole in the wall that it promptly swallowed it whole and gave me the message that the card was reported either lost or stolen! That wasn't me but when I contacted the bank I was informed that the fraud department had acted immediately due to suspicious activity namely declined sales involving sums of £500+ and £1000+ and probably others! It would appear that this was picked up promptly and therefore I hope that it will cause minimal inconvenience. Unfortunately I can't access my on-line bank details because it's blocked and therefore I will need to reset that and then check for any oddities.
A useful reminder that you are never really safe on-line!

Alec, what a terrible thing to happen, Are you managing to get it sorted out?

The first thing I did when reading your post late yesterday was to check my online bank access and see that all was OK with my accounts. Fortunately it was.

Hi Alec,
Sorry to hear that!
I hope you get it sorted out very soon.
This is one worry I have about on-line banking, and why I don't use it. Whenever I purchase anything on-line, I only use my credit card; OK, the same thing could happen, but at least I'll know, and be able to report it, before I have to pay the bill!!

Cheers,
Ged

Sorry to hear about that Alec, hope it all gets sorted soon.

It is a big worry now with all the scams and fiddles going on, I tend to use paypal now when that is an option, the less sites you have to put your bank details into the better.

The saga continues. When I tried to restart access to my on-line account with my bank, I apparently failed their security test!  Shocked   Shocked   Shocked  This meant I had to go into Rochdale and present myself for identification via photo ID, etc. The pleasant young lady duly went through the procedures, and pronounced me to be me! However when she spoke to the fraud department they still refused to allow access as she hadn't known me for 6 months! So now I have to wait for my new debit card and PIN number and then revisit the Rochdale branch to complete the security procedure.
I'll be honest and say that it's a pain, BUT I don't have a problem as I prefer to be safe rather than sorry.
From what I could gather the balance in the account is more or less correct, and hence no financial loss other than petrol and parking costs getting into Rochdale.

I only use a Credit Card on the net as I believe you have more protection. A couple of years ago I checked my Credit Card balance to find that £1000 had been spent on ITunes! I quickly reported this to the bank and they took over, issued me a new card and restored the balance. No problems since, but agree it is a worry.

I am writing these posts on my wife's computer, as I have disconnected mine from the internet! I am still having trouble over the bank problem, and I'm still barred from accessing my on-line account. I can get money from the ATM, but that's about all!  Crying or Very sad   Crying or Very sad   Crying or Very sad   Crying or Very sad   Crying or Very sad

Apparently access to this account has been attempted from an assortment of mobiles - none of which are mine, which is hardly surprising as I now don't have one, but thankfully they have all failed!

I am therefore arranging to have the computer deep cleaned so to speak, because as far as I can tell the only way for the details to be compromised is for something anti-social creeping into the computer!

Therefore I'll be off-line for at least 36-48 hours!

Hi Alec,
Sorry to hear about these Idiots hacking your account.... Just as a thought, can you tell me what Firewall Software you use?? Also do you make sure you log out of every web page etc where you purchase Online.... Also just so you know I have had issues in the past with Argos by signing up to a freebie.... It didn't end up being a Freebie or money off! It ended up costing me £10 a month!!!  Evil or Very Mad
If you do online banking check whom is debiting your account and do a search in Google.... You'd be amazed how people are able to Scam you!
Hope you re able to sort it soon....
Best Wishes
Andy

I have just completed a Malwarebytes Pro scan, and this found some items namely something called "Babylon.A" and another called "Hacktool.Wpakill". These have been deleted, and I can only hope that that will satisfy the bank!
