mid east plus V1

Post  billbloggs on Sun 18 Jan 2015, 12:19 am

Hi all,
First post and about to acquire my first UK route - Mid East Plus V1 after seeing very positive comments on the Train-Sim.com site.
I have recently installed Open Rails ( just soooooo good ) and would appreciate advice if, as a mini route, it can be accessed via
Open Rails?  If so are there any 'tricks' involved or will it automatically appear in the Open Rails menu?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
Duncan

Hi Duncan

Welcome to the forum. OK

In answer to your question, yes you can run a mini-route in OR, when you open OR the default profile should be your main MSTS folder, you can add other profiles to the list by clicking "Add" at the top of the OR page, then select the mini-route folder, select the train simulator folder within the mini-route folder and click OK, Rename from train simulator to the name of the mini-route in the box provided then click OK again, it will now be added to your list of profiles, you can do this with as many MSTS installations or mini-routes as you like, then on opening OR you select the MSTS installation or mini-route of your choice from the profile drop down menu, it should run exactly the same as the routes in your main MSTS folder. remember to unstore either the chosen act or unstore everything in the mini-route before you open OR.

Appreciate the prompt response Mark and very pleased to hear that Open Rails is compatible with mini routes with which I have had no
experience in the past. Your clear and concise instructions will be a great help.
Thanks

Hi Duncan.

I have installed MEP+ onto my new computer and added it to the latest version of OR exactly as per instructions above, it's working perfectly so you have no worries about compatibility.  OK

Thanks for that Mark. I have purchased the dvd however yet to receive it although delivery to Australia is not 'overnight' unfortunately.
The screenshots etc I have turned up and the various comments suggest the route is something special and quite looking forward to installing.

Your insight into mini routes now has me considering how I might utilise these for other routes in the overall scheme of things. Must say
the quality of experience that Open Rails brings to virtual train simming is just stunning - such an improvement over the ' ol' girl '.
Cheers
Duncan

For details of Mini Routes, etc. see HERE. It includes a link to the method of setting up Mini Routes which is located on Steam4me.

Really appreciate you providing the advice Alec unsolicited. Not having used Route-riter in the past I am grateful for the
comprehensive instructions contained on the SteamForMe site which, based on the success of the 'install MSTS to Win7'
tutorial I have previously used, I am sure will work just as well.

As soon as time permits I will try my hand at creating a mini route. Initially I hope might allow reinstall of several Payware
older routes which up until now I did not want to place back into the current MSTS install, being conscious of limitations.

Thanks
Duncan

Hi Duncan.

You talk of limitations, do you have Trainstore installed? with trainstore you have no limit to the amount of routes and stock you can have in MSTS (other than HD space) as it only loads the current route and act making MSTS load faster and run more efficiently with everything else stored safely away. OK

Some years ago Mark I actually installed Trainstore after having run up against the dreaded was it the number of consists MSTS could
accommodate? It worked well however I experienced difficulty accessing all the rolling stock at any one time to change / create
consists - from memory the issue was the unpack time as much as anything. Admittedly computer hardware at the time was well
short in performance to todays standards and certainly may warrant me having another look at the utility.

The other consideration is the 'spoilt' factor whereby the more recent route products are of such a high standard that some earlier
payware  routes suffer by comparison. This is where for me mini routes could come into their own enabling the occasional access
to earlier route products at present just 'gathering dust' without cluttering the current MSTS install that works so well after having
set up via the Steam4Me tutorial and now run through Open Rails.

The flexibility of MSTS due to all the hard work the 'community creators' have put in fortunately leaves me somewhat spoilt for
choice to set the sim to 'play' for maximum enjoyment and I'm sure they realise how appreciative we are of all their efforts.
Trainstore is just one example of their ingenuity.

As this topic illustrates the willingness of people to offer advice and support just adds to the enjoyment to be had no matter what
your skill level.
Thankyou
Duncan

Yes accessing rolling stock is a problem when it's stored, I get round that by going into the trainstore/trains/trainset folder, selecting the stock I want to use, then I cut it and paste it into my MSTS trainset folder (Click "Yes" to merge the folders) so it is available for the consist editor, I did it earlier today when I wanted a GWR manor to add to some Pullmans I'd downloaded, I just cut and copied it into my trainset folder, I think there is also a way of doing that in trainstore, but I gave up on it when I couldn't work out how to do it properly.

That sounds like an effective 'work around' Mark. My problem would be deciding and identifying the rolling
stock I would like to use. Usually I spend quite some time 'surfing' the consist editor lists.

Of recent times to overcome the necessity to continually download rolling stock zip files for new activities I have
started using the template facility for whole trains which works well. It is somewhat dependent on the activity
description provided by the creator to preserve his intent in selection of trains but todate I have had quite some
success. One little trick is not to install the activity files until after determining the consists or you have boxes
to check regularly for errors to proceed.

The ActivityMaster utility has provided great value in 'sorting' activities although I have not progressed to the
point of setting up lists etc so more value to be had if and when I apply myself. Must say the aftersale support
from Steve Davis is first class.

Installed MidEastPlus route as per your directions Mark and just works so well in Open Rails.

And what a route!! Visually superb and the interaction of so many AI trains means no sitting back
and leisurely watching the world pass by - far and away the best utilisation of AI trains I have seen!

Just a bit of intel for anyone interested. Two activities have provided an intro to the route for me - Long
Distance Mail and Steel from Scunthorpe for those of us not familiar with UK Rail. The latter actually
provides the opportunity to see USAF B52's landing at Burn Airfield adjoining Barlow Siding - how in
the world did the creators manage that?!

A couple of items that helped me get started:
http://www.uktrainsim.com/index2.php?form_reader=miniloader  (tutorial)
Detailed maps (pdf) are contained in the Route Docs file "MEP the Route"
To release Emergency brakes 'Ctrl M' and a second press sees signals reinstalled to auto ( Wont elaborate
on why I needed to sort that!)

Just my impressions however I think would be a hard marker anyone who didn't agree the route compares
most favourably with the best of the Payware products available and the small charge for dvd and postage
represents great value in my view.

Thanks again Mark.

Hi Frank, I didn't realise that you had made so many wonderful items for MSTS, some of which are contained in the route I was responsible for (Scottish Central Plus) Your animated aircraft are really good and such a good variety to choose from. My route building days are over now, as I just don't have the time these days, but I still enjoy MSTS as it give me hours of enjoyment just running the hundreds of routes there are now available. From just four bog standard routes when it first came out in 2002, we now have hundreds of routes to choose from and thousands of items of rolling stock and scenery items. From little Acorns, Mighty Oaks do grow! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
