MSTS Crashes - Exception Code 0xc0000005

Post  sbowness on Sat 24 Jan 2015, 1:57 am

Gents

Newbie question.

I've had a couple of crashes today with Windows capturing Exception Code 0xc0000005 in the Event Log (generally at highly inconvenient moments). This seems to be a generic stack overflow error and a search through the forums produce some suggestions:

  • Lower the graphics quality
  • Get a better graphics card (I'm using a nVidia GT610 now)
  • Use Train Store

Which would you choose and why, please? I've probably not provided enough information here so I'm happy to provide more detail.

Cheers

Hi Stephen.
I would definitely use Trainstore as a first option, trainstore frees up a lot of resources in MSTS, in fact a very large MSTS installation won't even work without trainstore,  your nVidia GT610 graphics card should be fine with MSTS, another thing you could try is lowering the sound setting a little, that has helped me with one route that was causing problems crashing back to desktop, if you haven't already installed MSTS Bin, it might be a good idea to install that too.

Hi Mark

Thanks for that. I'll give it a go. I'm going to do a very un-boy-like thing and read the manual first.

I've got MSTS Bin installed already and the PC should have enough resources - i5-2500 with 8GB DDR3 RAM. Chatting with Ged during the week he thought the GT610 might be just a little short when it came to bandwidth. Running Win8.1 throws up a few variables too.

One thing I have noticed is that some engine sounds seem to come through quite late but that might be the engine itself. Also, I might switch on monitoring to check my RAM and CPU stats. I generally have Firefox running in the background and that has been taking up a chunk of resources and has quite buggy recently, Could be something to do with the huge number of tabs I have open. I think I need to do some work with bookmarks...

Cheers

I would try trainstore first before splashing out on any new hardware.

Have you tried Waterfox? it is similar to Firefox but designed to run on 64bit systems and is not as buggy as Firefox either, I am using Waterfox now and am quite impressed with it. (if you decide to try it, download it directly from their site (link below) if you don't want a load of unwanted adware/malware bundled with it)

Interesting. I might give it a go.

I hate to bail out on Firefox as I've used it since the very beginning, but Chrome seems to give people less hassle these days. It's our preferred non-IE browser at work.

One other consideration too. Never look too hard if it stops you from getting a new piece of kit Very Happy

Chrome is my default browser, but I find that I'm using waterfox more since I installed it.
