consist checks

Post  bharrison on Thu 05 Feb 2015, 9:58 pm

Hi,

I'm doing some research into an activity using all 4 members of the A class Pacifics by the LNER.

I've tried each of the for loco's with a full VSOE set with mixed results some can haul it easier than others I was just wondering if another user could try the rakes out and see what they get.

The route is the LSC if that helps.

A full VSOE Pullman rake is about 400 tons.

Hi Ben,
Can you give us the UKTS file IDs of the locos you want to use, please?  There are 16 in the library!!

Cheers,
Ged

Here's the locos in order

BR A1 60163 Tornado in Blue & Support Coach File ID: 30144

BR A2 60532 Blue Peter File ID: 26060

LNER A3 4472 Flying Scotsman File ID: 27160

LNER Class A4 4464 Bittern File ID: 31304

the acts using Tornado, Blue Peter and Flying Scotsman are planned to use tornados support coach

and Bittern will use clan line support coach Mercator as it's the correct colour of Bittern's latest support coach.

Hi Ben,
I've carried out some very short tests using the locos and their specified support coaches together with the 10 Pullman coaches as used in your goyle & growl activities.  I show the loco number, the weight of the complete train (as shown in ConBuilder)  and the time to reach 20mph from a stand using the Victoria 11 to Brighton 6 path in Explore mode on LSC.

60163 -- 571.72 Imp Tons -- 1 min
60532 -- 568.57 Imp Tons -- 1 min 10 secs
4472   -- 566.21 Imp Tons -- 1 min 34 secs - loco is prone to slipping **
4464   -- 575.15 Imp Tons -- 1 min 07 secs - slight slipping

As all these locos have vacuum brakes, I used the vacuum-braked versions of the Pullman and Mercator coaches.

** I put Flying Scotsman's relatively poor performance down to my (lack of) driving skills!   I'm sure there's not much difference between the locos in the right hands Smile

Cheers,
Ged

Ged,

4464 was the easiest for me get started.

4472 was like that with me as well.

But those results are interesting.

For comaprison I decided to do the same test as Ged.
I let the train sit for a full minute before moving off to allow full brake release and for boiler pressures to rise.
Timings are to 20mph. Sander on to stop slipping. Weights are from Convoi.

Weight of train no engine:
Tornado Support coach and VSOE set: 416t
Mercator Support coach and VSOE set: 418t

4472 (575.3t): 2m 30 sec (Full pressure no blower needed. Still slipped with sander on. Topped out at 17mph on grade due to induced slipping with sander on.)
4464 (584.38t): 40 sec (Full pressure no blower needed)
60532 (577.7t): 43 sec (Only had 200psi after 40 sec with blower going. Blower dropped back to normal before run).
60163 (580.9t): 36 sec (Full pressure no blower needed)

Admitedly the sander has sped up my timings.
Of note is the fact that 4472 really can't get its power down due to the sanding and normal grip both being set to 0.3 in eng file where as the others are set at 2 for sanding.

Throttle/reverser settings on all but 4472 were at 100/75, 4472 (I did a few runs to try and get the best out of it but no luck) 24/75.
I have no idea why Tornado shot off like that, it took me by surprise.
